The impact of the microwave oven could be compared to the invention of sliced-bread. How could we ever get along without it these days. It can reheat frozen food or cook raw food in a fraction of the time required of a conventional oven and has brought the convenience of preparing food to new levels. Now a portable microwave oven offers those same capabilities to people who need to prepare food away [...]

The purse….what can you say about it? Every woman has one, and some men are catching on to the convenience of a ”carry-all”. But with such a universal product, the design itself has stuck to a tried-and-true mold: A big handbag that opens in the center. I guess the world has accepted this concept, but what it lacks is good accessibility to your stuff. The pocket is usually [...]

We were already thinking about 3D displays, what with the Blu-ray Association’s new 3D HD specification, but Ivan Poupryev’s Lumen prototype takes things one tactile step further. His concept involves an array of physically moving pixels, each of which can independently light up and extend out from the screen. As well as moving, undulating shapes, there’s also a sensor layer on top which [...]

We give digital photo frames a hard time here at SlashGear; it’ll take integrated WiFi just to get you through the door, normally, since we reckon that’s a must-have feature these days. Even more appealing is integrated 3G, and while the TransTechnology Transgear TGP-701MG may not quite manage to make it internal, this 7-inch Japanese photo frame does at least offer a way to get online. Instead [...]

At CES in January 2009, thin TVs were everywhere. It seemed like each day of the show one company or another was talking about the world’s thinnest TV. It seems that at CES 2010 we are set to see some thin TVs as well. LG unveiled a massively thin LCD screen today that is only 2.6mm thick. Despite how thin it is the screen is also large at 42-inches and uses LED backlighting. The entire set will [...]

I admit I am all giddy at the thought of watching 3D Blu-ray films on my PS3. The thing that interests me more though is 3D broadcast programming, and not that horrible Chuck quality 3D NBC tried out last season either. Engadget reports that DirecTV is set to offer the first broadcast 3D channel in America in 2010. The new channel will be courtesy of the new satellite that is scheduled to launch. The [...]

Recently I asked, if a DROID could take on the Death Star? Now, Motorola and Verizon, along with some help from Google launched DROID. I’ve spent the day with a device and here’s what I think so far. First, Verizon was clear that DROID is going to be a family of devices running Android, Motorola’s device will be the only one called DROID, others will be known as the DROID-XXX. DROID is the first [...]

It looks like Dell is planning to release a mobile internet device, or a MID. The details are few and far between but the product—code-named Streak—looks like it packs Wi-Fi, 3G and Android 2.0 all into one. It is exactly what Intel has been calling a mobile internet device for the past few years: larger than a smartphone, primarily for accessing the Net, and featuring multimedia and even GPS functionality. [...]

Last week, the buzz was clearly on the DROID (see my first take here) but there was another device that was also getting a lot of attention, albeit somewhat more restrained as few folks had one to work with. A few weeks ago, I wrote a column that emphasized people shouldn’t dismiss Windows Mobile. Over the last week I’ve been using the phone with the quiet buzz that proves that assertion. Sadly, [...]

Nokia has a problem: it is both the largest handset vendor in the world, by a significant margin, and the largest smartphone vendor in the world – again, by a significant margin. Yet it has never managed to crack the U.S. smartphone market, and it has begun losing market share even in its European strongholds, primarily to Apple, though RIM, Samsung, and HTC are also threats. Nokia admits that it [...]
