At CES in January 2009, thin TVs were everywhere. It seemed like each day of the show one company or another was talking about the world’s thinnest TV. It seems that at CES 2010 we are set to see some thin TVs as well. LG unveiled a massively thin LCD screen today that is only 2.6mm thick. Despite how thin it is the screen is also large at 42-inches and uses LED backlighting. The entire set will [...]

Having announced a PND with integrated HD Radio last January, Cydle is following up this coming CES with a new version that throws “HD Traffic” status updates into the mixture. The Cydle T43H is one of a number of new portable devices the company are planning, including the Cydle M7 MID and two PND/PMP combo devices, the T70 and T50. The Cydle T43H has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, internal HD Radio/HD [...]

I admit I am all giddy at the thought of watching 3D Blu-ray films on my PS3. The thing that interests me more though is 3D broadcast programming, and not that horrible Chuck quality 3D NBC tried out last season either. Engadget reports that DirecTV is set to offer the first broadcast 3D channel in America in 2010. The new channel will be courtesy of the new satellite that is scheduled to launch. The [...]

Recently I asked, if a DROID could take on the Death Star? Now, Motorola and Verizon, along with some help from Google launched DROID. I’ve spent the day with a device and here’s what I think so far. First, Verizon was clear that DROID is going to be a family of devices running Android, Motorola’s device will be the only one called DROID, others will be known as the DROID-XXX. DROID is the first [...]

It looks like Dell is planning to release a mobile internet device, or a MID. The details are few and far between but the product—code-named Streak—looks like it packs Wi-Fi, 3G and Android 2.0 all into one. It is exactly what Intel has been calling a mobile internet device for the past few years: larger than a smartphone, primarily for accessing the Net, and featuring multimedia and even GPS functionality. [...]

Last week, the buzz was clearly on the DROID (see my first take here) but there was another device that was also getting a lot of attention, albeit somewhat more restrained as few folks had one to work with. A few weeks ago, I wrote a column that emphasized people shouldn’t dismiss Windows Mobile. Over the last week I’ve been using the phone with the quiet buzz that proves that assertion. Sadly, [...]

Nokia has a problem: it is both the largest handset vendor in the world, by a significant margin, and the largest smartphone vendor in the world – again, by a significant margin. Yet it has never managed to crack the U.S. smartphone market, and it has begun losing market share even in its European strongholds, primarily to Apple, though RIM, Samsung, and HTC are also threats. Nokia admits that it [...]

Nokia’s first PC (as opposed to the phones they refer to as multimedia computers) got a lot of hype when it was announced and is getting a lot of mixed reviews from folks who complain mostly about price/performance and that you can get better specs in a netbook for less money. After spending some time with a Booklet 3G, I’m once again reminded that there’s more to a purchase than speeds and feeds, [...]

In a world that’s short on all sorts of resources from oil and gas to water, recently we’ve been asked to cut down our use yet more. Last week, Ralph de la Vega said heavy users of music over data on the AT&T wireless network were bandwidth hogs, that 3% of smartphone users were using 40% of his capacity and frankly, we need to all cut back just a bit. Spectrum is among the few things that [...]

I recently dined at a fancy restaurant here in NY with some friends and was surprised at the rather miniscule portions that were served. “Less is more” I was told and in this case it proved to be correct. Less was definitely more if we were talking about price. In terms of filling, however, less was most certainly, well, less. Fortunately there are also cheap, late night burger joints where more [...]

With the autumn 2008 release of the GoPro HERO Wide, now, GoPro has gone one better by introducing a High-Definition version of that same model. The water/shockproof HD HERO Wide sports a 170-degree lens, (which is over three times wider than its popular competitor), the Standard-Definition Oregon Scientific ATC5K. The wider lens definitely smoothes out the shakes and takes in more scenery, but it [...]

The Samsung CL80 is expected to be introduced at CES 2010 (January 7th-11th), and is a beefy addition to Samsung’s compact digital camera line. The design sports a minimalistic, slim-lined modern shape, without a lot of buttons. Instead, it stuffs a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen that actually covers the entire backside of the Samsung CL80 camera. The Samsung CL80 is a 14.2 Megapixel, 31mm wide-angle [...]

Apple has confirmed that their upcoming tablet display will size at 7″. That ‘s about the size of the device itself, considering the screen takes up nearly the entire real estate of the device. I have never really had a problem getting out of bed. The Alarm clock wakes me up just fine on low volume settings. I have known some people though who could sleep through a freight train rolling by. For the heavy sleeper a normal alarm may not cut it. Sonic Alert has an analog alarm clock called Sonic Boom Analog Alarm clock that promises to make it easy to wake up in the morning. The clock is analog [...]

We were less than impressed with Fujitsu’s first attempt at a netbook, the Atom N270-based Amilo Mini Ui 3520, and so we’re hoping the company makes a stronger showing with their Atom N450-powered Fujitsu LifeBook MH380. The MH380 has a 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 display, a 250GB hard-drive and 1GB of memory, as well as Intel’s newest Pine Trail 1.66GHz processor. The 2.97lb netbook is also said [...]

Apple’s refusal to add a netbook to its range has left many attempting to use the iPhone or iPod touch as a rough equivalent, but ease of text entry continues to frustrate. Happily, where Apple fall short the developer community delivers, with the simply-named iPhone Bluetooth Keyboard Driver. Soon to appear in the Cydia Store, v.1 of the driver allows you to wirelessly connect a Bluetooth keyboard [...]

Google’s Nexus One Android 2.1 smartphone has shown up in photos again, this time complete with packaging and a short demo video. Twitter user Bobby Robertson has shared some images of the Google Phone’s packaging together with a shot of the back of the HTC-made smartphone with the battery cover removed. To be fair, there aren’t that many surprises hiding behind the battery cover: a microSD [...]

Given they’re the ODM behind the Google Nexus One, and that they’re fast becoming one of the recognizable brands in smartphones, it seems like 2009 – and 2010 – really is HTC’s coming-of-age. Over at Wired they’ve been looking into what the company has done to rise from the ranks of OEMs, including setting a 95-percent “target failure rate” for its R&D division, to encourage faster [...]

Art Lebedev has brought out for us another novel concept, aside from the rather remarkable vision of the Transparentius. What looks at first glance to be one of those snake reading lights is actually a bendable digital camera in the shape of a flexible body with an integrated lens that can be hooked to either a viewfinder on the end of the camera, or an attachable 3-inch LCD display unit. Designed [...]

So Steve Jobs is “extremely happy with the new tablet”. That’s always good news with the Apple chief (he’s apparently already killed it off twice). Furthermore, Apple is expected to make a major product announcement on Tuesday, January 26th in San Francisco (possibly called iSlate), and Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has noted that “there is a 75 percent likelihood that Apple will [...]
